English for Developers
I'm not so sure translation is a good way of learning english. Especially for the beginners. What I want to say is, read english and understand itself is what all we need. And for me, translating is one more step from it. Just like reading "I am a boy.". Nobody has to translate that sentence. But If sentence become more complex, you will probably change your mind and get your mind prepared to translate as you learned in a school. bBut before that, read it several times more and try to feel it's meaning. If you feel even though you can't explane in Korean. That's o.k. Your doing well.
Doing something and explaining something is totally different. It's like "catching a ball". Anyhow good or not, you can catch a ball. So, can you explain how to? And there is another question, Do you really do the way you explain? Probably not.
English teachers taught you how to translate because it has a perfect way to explain how. But Language is not for calculate, encrypt or analyze.
There is a complex Korean text also, how do you do with it? Do you try to encrypt or calculate as you do with English?
I did practice English by this method from the biggining, and there is pros and cons. the biggist problem was that there was noway to prove. My TOIEC scores sucks, the last one I got was around five or six hundred point- although it was very long time ago. no knowledge about grammar. Nobody had believed I could talk or read properly. But I could do what I want to do with English. Its because I just aim to do what I wanted to do. If you want to use english in various field and reason. its little bit different. but If you just want to read dev-document and nothing else, just start reading it, At the beginning It will stuck with grammar and vocabularies, but during the repeated practice you will find there is very small set of those where needed.
Sometime I wish I had some more grammar, vocab, or scores. but actually Its not worth then what I can do right now. what is more important to you? find it and aim it.
Sorry for talking this at a last, though I design to do it on purpose. I'm not sure this method can be work on you. I was born in U.S. and short period of time, I had been lived there, and also I'm living right now in U.S.
But after living there one to two, and six to seven years of my life, I forgot all about English. When I was in elementry school in Korea, I even don't know the famous dialog such as 'How do you do?' - well, the fact is I can't feel that sentence even now. I re-start my English same as you, from the middle school. And I thought I was same as normal Koreans until the last years of high school.
One day during the night study, a friend of mine complaining about the time shortage of english exam. I was curious why. And I look in to his working. He was translating. Oh my god! The translating process was exactly the same as the teacher does in a class. Translate the words, and analyze the form of sentence, and re-build to Korean sentense. I realized the importance of my experience in U.S. And with that experience, I realized everybody has to know another way to learn a language. I mean, this method.
Lots of people shock about this method, and lots of friends who know my history refuse to admit It can work for them.
And also I have practicing this more then a decade, and your not. Does it really worth to annoy your self to change the way of your own? I'm really not sure. But I really wanted to talk about this, because I belive there is someone who cannot concentrate to study english by original method. And for them, this can be a great help.
I appreciate for reading this rough text, this far.
Thank you.
